The Once Proud Christmas Tree

April 22, 2013

I was walking through

The skeletal remains

Of what used to be

A pear orchard

Once proud and

Bounty-laden trees

Were now gnarled

And spindly caricatures

Blackberry vines

Were everywhere

Thick as a brood

Of thorny snakes

The leafy tendrils

Were industriously

Involved in choking

Life out of the old trees

Then I saw the once

Proud Christmas tree

It stood alone and dead

Framed by green chaos

Such an ignoble fate

For Yuletide decor

That was once festooned

In holiday splendor

Now it stood as

A mockery of its

intended meaning

And significance

I rejoice

That while symbols

Can be subject to

The laws of entropy

The God who

Spoke this world

Into existence

Is not
