Our Black and White TV Set

April 30, 2013

Though we lived in a middle-class

Double-income household

We watched the 1960s unfold before us

as if it were a black and white documentary

When a program boasted

That it would be broadcast

In luxurious living color

The peacock spread gray plumage

My father’s reasoning

Was both simple and expressive

When asked why he would reply

Because color is too damned expensive

  1. I remember it well. When I asked my father why we didn’t get color – I got my first lesson about prices and supply & demand.
