Waking Up Is Hard To Do

I once read editorial cartoonist
M. G. Lord describe getting out
of bed in the morning as birth trauma.

Emerging from the womb-like warmth
of the covers and meeting the gaze
of a cold and indifferent new day

I’ve always agreed with her assessment,
as I too do battle with the onslaught of
consciousness each and every morning.

But the cartoonist forgot to mention
what I like to call the second birth trauma
of the morning—the shower.

The shower blasts away sleep and
lethargy, while at the same time,
massages life back into the body.

Emerging from the steaming blanket of
negative ions is the true embracement
of morning, as there is no turning back.

It’s negative ions that do the trick!
