Toy Soldier

January 12, 2015

the campaigns are over and
his services no longer needed

his general grown
and gone long ago

The soldier lost his arm
in a singular engagement

against an army of teddy
bears and bobble heads

and the fall from the
table-top battlefield

left him irreparable and
his painted uniform marred

His retirement home
is made of cardboard

And he shares his room with
a race car missing tires

a smileless clown sans eyes
and a rusted-out robot dog

There are others with him and
all are disabled in different ways

The word scrawled on the outside
of his home reads “BROKEN”

The noble and faithful soldier
sleeps under a blanket of dust

amidst a menagerie of castoffs
now designated simply as refuse
